One thing that distinguishes the Germanic gods is that they are no where near as unreasonable and inflexible as the Abrahamic gods. Our gods do not try to destroy us and put us into such "damned if you do and damned if you don't" situations. The gods do not operate by our rigid modern notions of law. For example, "ignorance of the law is no excuse for the law" would not be considered to be particularly wise by the elder heathen, because while this may be true sometimes, sometimes ignorance of the "law" is indeed a particularly good excuse.
The gods also don't always turn their backs on men "forever." It really depends on what men have done. If someone has done something worthy of outlawry, such as treason, then the gods might turn their backs on him forever. But often times humans make mistakes, but with no ill will intended, in which case the gods might turn their backs on you for a while, to teach you a lesson, but will then come to favour you again once the lesson has been learned.
Also, it should be mentioned that "finding out the truth about the gods and venerating them" is not something that we in Theodism see as being able to qualify for entry into Valhalla, or any of the other halls of the gods. In Christianity, there is the notion that faith alone is required for salvation. Most of Asatru seems to share the Christian perspective: they think that as long as one believes in the gods, the gods love you to death just the way you are, no matter how much of a destructive rogue a person might be. Theodism could not be more the opposite. It is worth that is required to get into the halls of the gods at the time of death, and worth is acquired by doing good works and worthy deeds, and leading a moral, honorable life.
