Worthiness?
.
Heilsa
Thats a question with some "Meat on the Bone".
If that were the only consideration for Heathens then our lives would be
simple, like that of Xians.
Of course though, we live our lives much differently than that question
might imply.
To be worthy you must do those things that Frith,Grith and Kinship are based
upon. Our lives are more than our relationship(s) with the Gods. Our lives
are our families, friends and community. They encompas our oaths and our
work. Our dedication to our deeds and tasks. Who can call themselves worthy
when their children or neighbor suffers. It is this persistant, often
mind-numbing tedium that makes a person worthy. Beowulf was a worthy man for
his great deeds. "Carl" the farmer is no less worthy for not
slaying a fearsome beast. He is worthy because of his relentless toil and
sacrifice. Where did it say that Beowulf cleared and cultivated his farm
with an axe. Plowed with a bronze tipped wooden plow. Harvested his crops
and thanked the Gods and his neighbor for their help.
That worthiness resides in us all. It is why we are Heathen. Anyone who
thinks they are Heathen solely because of their relationship with the Gods
has yet to come to understand. We are Heathen because we Honor ourselves,
our lives and ancestors, through the Gods.
Will the Gods judge ME worthy? I HAVE NEVER ASKED THAT OF THE GODS. Because
it is in my own hands to bring to THEM, that part of my Meign. The job
of the Fylga or Fetch is to record our deeds. That is imutable to our faith.
If I be a worthy Father it is because of my children. A husband? My wife
shall decide. Friend, Kinsman? They shall decide what my actions or
inactions have meant.
Yes, to be worthy is most important. Not for the sake of the Gods. But for
the sake of those that we hold most dear. Our families and friends. The Gods
merely acknoweledge what Urd has woven. The Havamal is laced with wisdom on
our behavior. Lessons to be taught and learned in our everyday life.
